Need a few tips on being in the water surfing?

now me and my brother just went out on the water today , turns out we suck lol, which we knew it would take time to get at least half way decent. but i need to know some tips for when im in the water and actually catching a wave , im from long island, so idk of any good spots out her yet seeming im still noob
